Pregnancy can be a wonderful, exciting, and nerve-wracking time in a couple’s life. It’s a time of many changes, not only in your lifestyle but also your physical health.

These days, the majority of pregnancies result in healthy, happy children and parents. However, there are a number of treatments available that may help support your pregnancy, minimize complications, and help you deal with some of the symptoms of having a new baby gestating inside you.

Dr. JJ offers naturopathic services to help support you during your pregnancy, as well as after your child has been born.

Naturopathic Pregnancy Support

Your pregnancy is divided into “trimesters”, three roughly equal periods of three months during which certain milestones are achieved.

Each trimester comes with its own unique health concerns and complications. It’s important to have a healthcare practitioner who can support you through this process and who knows what to look for.

Here are some of the health concerns you can expect during each trimester.

Naturopathic Treatments During First Trimester

You may not even realize you’re pregnant during at least part of the first trimester. However, this period is different for every woman.

A number of women experience sore and tender breasts, constipation, frequent urination, heartburn, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, and may also experience anemia.

From the perspective of the child’s development, this is the phase during which many of the brain’s neural tubes form. So it’s important to provide support during this period in order to help these neural tubes to form healthily and avoid defects such as spina bifida.

The vast majority of miscarriages happen during this period as well, and so much of the healthcare provided during this period is focused on preventing miscarriages.

Naturopathic Treatments During Second Trimester

Compared to the 1st and 3rd trimesters, the 2nd trimester is relatively simple.

Nonetheless, there are a number of common effects from it, including:

  • Anemia
  • Back pain
  • Increased susceptibility to infections
  • Possibility of gestational diabetes
  • Pregnancy hypertension
  • Pre-eclampsia

During this phase, your health care team should focus on helping you deal with these effects, as well as continuing to support the healthy development of your baby.

Naturopathic Treatments During Third Trimester

During the final trimester of your pregnancy, one of the key concerns is preparing you for labour.

Because labour is one of the most physically intense experiences most people will have, it’s important to help you prepare as much as possible.

Other complications can involve:

  • Acid reflux
  • Constipation
  • Varicose veins
  • Back pain
  • Bladder infections
  • Vaginal infections

Dr. JJ Can Support You

There are a number of pregnancy complications that may require treatment, including but not limited to:

  • Pre-eclampsia
  • Pregnancy-induced hypertension
  • Gestational diabetes
  • Placental abnormalities (accreta, previa and abruption)
  • Chicken pox
  • Group b strep

Dr. JJ will also recommend supplements that may assist with labour and minimize labour complications and improve post-delivery recovery.

In addition you may also have existing health conditions that require treatment during pregnancy, such as hypothyroid, diabetes, obesity, elevated cholesterol, depression, anxiety, insomnia, constipation, IBS, fatigue, adrenal fatigue, stress management and many many others.

After delivery, you may also need support with breastfeeding and post-delivery complications.  These can include mastitis (breast infection), nipple/milk duct infection, breastfeeding difficulties, post-partum depression, pain, slow wound healing and others.  I can assist you in the treatment and prevention of these.
