Health Insurance

Does Health Insurance Cover Naturopathic Medicine?

Currently, OHIP does not cover visits to a naturopathic doctor, chiropractor, osteopath, massage therapy, or the services of most other healthcare practitioners other than medical doctors.

OHIP does a great job of putting you back together after an accident or helping with chronic diseases. But most people in Ontario at some point in their lives need to visit a healthcare practitioner who isn’t covered by OHIP.

When this happens, you’ll need to either pay out of pocket, or use your extended health insurance plan.

But surprisingly, many people don’t know what’s covered under their health insurance.

Most extended health insurance plans include something called “paramedical services”. These services have nothing to do with paramedics, however.

Paramedical services include things like chiropractic, registered massage therapy, osteopathy, acupuncture, and naturopathic medicine. It may also cover trips to a psychologist, speech therapist, and a number of other health-related services.

If you have an extended health insurance plan, take a look at your benefits package. You may be entitled to partial or even full coverage of your naturopathic treatments without even realizing it.
