Chemotherapy is one of the most effective treatments for cancer we have, but it comes with its own share of drawbacks as well.

Beyond the most visible side effect of hair loss, you may also experience fatigue, constipation, nausea, anemia, changes in appetite, numbness/nerve pain and more.

Chemotherapy may deplete your nutrients reserves, including the antioxidant vitamin C and E, which are some of your body’s most useful tools for fighting off free radicals. Free Radicals have been linked to many different diseases, including cancer.

So while chemotherapy does a lot of good, it also has some harmful effects as well.

But how can you minimize these harmful effects?

Adjunctive Naturopathic Treatment during Chemotherapy

As you undergo chemotherapy, there may be some debate with your medical oncologist and most likely some compromise with respect to the inclusion of antioxidants in your treatment plan.

If your oncologist asks you to avoid antioxidants during your chemotherapy, Dr. JJ will focus on building up your nutrient reserves pre-chemotherapy and then replenishing them post-chemotherapy. Not all vitamins and supplements have antioxidant properties. You’ll get a treatment plan of supplements that can be taken along with chemotherapy and will be acceptable to your oncologist (an open communication is best here).

If your oncologist allows the use of antioxidants, nutrient supplementation and treatments may be used.  Some treatments may be in the form of IV therapy, which can be administered on off-days away from your chemotherapy (usually 5 times the half life of the chemotherapy drug or for example, one week on chemo followed by one week IV nutrients).  You’ll get a treatment plan that will be acceptible to your oncologist (an open communication is best here).

The Cancer Vitamin C IV or Cancer Cachexia IV may be used, or even the Standard Nutrient (Myer’s cocktail) IV may also be used along with mistletoe therapy and oral supplementation.

The supplements suggested and treatment plan developed will be designed to avoid any adverse drug reactions with your chemotherapy drugs and help minimize treatment side effects, such as nausea, neuropathy, diarrhea, fatigue, loss of appetite, mouth ulcers, weight loss, nerve pain, numbness and cachexia.

Because of Dr. JJ’s background in pharmaceutical sciences, he can safely assess a combination of drugs and natural products.
