The older we get, the more obsessed we get with retaining our youth, it seems.

This is a trope so old that the “Fountain of Youth” appears in the first history book ever written, back in the 5th century BCE.

But these days, humanity has come a long way to understanding the causes of aging. And it’s not as simple as we thought.

What Causes Aging?

The truth is, aging is not the result of any one single factor but is the cumulative result of a number of different factors.

Here are some of the most common causes of aging:

Cell Senescence

This is the process by which cells lose their ability to divide.

Cells can generally reach a maximum of about 50 divisions before they lose their ability to do so. The older we get, the more of our cells lose this ability.

Diminished Telomerase Activity

Telomeres are the caps found at the end of a strand of DNA, like the tips at the end of your shoelaces, and they serve a similar purpose.

Without telomeres, your DNA can become damaged and fray to the point where it is no longer able to do its job.

As we get older, our telomeres shorten, which contributes to cellular aging.

Protein degradation

The proteins in your cells need to be consistently replenished in order to maintain your cells’ functions. As we age, this function begins to decrease.

Genetics

Multiple genetic factors are at play. Taking a look at your family history can help you better understand what issues you may face in your own future.

Other factors may include:

  • Advanced glycation end products
  • Excess sugar activity
  • Progressive systemic inflammation
  • Progressive dehydration
  • Accumulated toxic build-up in organ tissue
  • Reduced circulation
  • Reduced cellular energy production
  • Changes in hormone levels and hormone balance
  • Impeded energy flows in the body
  • Excessive body weight
  • Lifestyle factors
  • Stress
  • And, of course, good old wear and tear
