Acupuncture is one of the oldest methods of healing still in use today, having been used to treat a variety of illnesses for over 2000 years.

It has been proven effective for a wide variety of different health conditions, and remains common all over the world.

It’s based in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), and as such a TCM-based diagnosis is often common before administering acupuncture.

What Is A TCM Diagnosis?

A TCM diagnosis is different than diagnoses you may have encountered in modern western medicine. It’s based on observation and a thorough patient interview.

During your initial interview, Dr. JJ will speak with you to evaluate the following:

  • Your body’s balance of yin and yang (hot and cold properties)
  • Deficiencies or patterns of disease
  • The state of your internal organs and channels

Once the assessment is complete, Dr. JJ will select a series of points to apply acupuncture needles to.

Does Acupuncture Hurt?

This is a common and understandable question – after all, inserting needles into your body sounds painful.

However, while some report a dull ache, most are entirely comfortable with the experience. If you do experience any discomfort during your session, let Dr. JJ know and he can tailor your experience to increase your comfort.

How Does Acupuncture Work?

The idea behind acupuncture is the insertion of needles into specific acupoints found along your body’s energetic channels, called meridianal channels. Manipulation of these needles can help your body increase its energy flow, nourishing or relaxing the channel.

The theory of meridianal channels is fundamental to acupuncture. There are 365 different points mapped along the body’s 12 major channels, and over a thousand on the hands, ears, and scalp. Qi (pronounced “chee”) is the energy that flows through these channels, which helps to balance yin and yang and nourish the internal organs.

Acupuncture needles are thin, and generally felt only when they first touch the skin. They are single-use disposable needles.
