Natural treatments for type 1 and 2 diabetes
By Dr. JJ Dugoua ND PhD
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), approximately 150 million people have type 2 diabetes worldwide, and this number may well double by the year 2025. As diabetes is a growing health concern, there is a need for effective control and management of this disease using pharmacologic and natural health products (NHPs), alone or in combination.
Close to 30 NHPs were clinically studied for either type 1 or 2 diabetes, or as hypoglycemics. A number of the NHP clinical studies on type 1 and 2 diabetes will be discussed, including: gymnema, fenugreek, fig leaf, chromium, cinnamon, milk thistle, red clover, ginseng, bitter melon, holy basil, green tea, alfalfa and ashwaghanda. For each NHP studied, the treatment protocol will be presented in detail, with particular emphasis on dosing, adverse effects and drug interactions.
